With the SEC Media Days concluded, each of the 16 teams in the Southeastern Conference is gearing up for a crucial year. In light of this, many are devising arguments to maintain the belief that the SEC still dominates college football.

Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner, addressed concerns at the Football Media Day held at the Tampa Marriott Water Street in Tampa, Florida, on July 20, 2026. The rhetoric among SEC supporters suggests a deep conference, with more talent than rivals, based on recruiting and NFL Draft figures. However, criticisms arise due to the Big Ten’s recent success, winning three consecutive national titles.

Nick Saban, historically a leading figure in the SEC, acknowledged the strength of the conference’s depth and talent. While the SEC boasts more talent and depth than the Big Ten, the perceived gap has narrowed. Despite this, the SEC’s reputation suffers from its recent College Football Playoff performance.

The SEC failed to secure a national title in three years and didn’t claim a win over a Power 4 program outside the conference last season. Notably, Alabama and Ole Miss secured victories over intra-conference opponents. This suggests a poor showing outside their domain, drawing critiques from non-conference fans.
