Sen. Murkowski Announces Opposition to Attorney General Nominee Todd Blanche

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced her decision to oppose President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche. This opposition narrows Blanche’s path to confirmation, as Murkowski is a significant figure in this process.

Murkowski expressed her concerns in a statement on the social media platform X, highlighting the need for an Attorney General who can restrain the administration’s “worst impulses.” She mentioned, “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.” This statement indicates a lack of trust in Blanche’s ability to fulfill this role.

One of Murkowski’s primary concerns is the “sweeping immunity protections granted to the president” and the “politicization—even weaponization” of the Department of Justice. Additionally, Murkowski pointed to the anti-weaponization fund, initially proposed by the Trump administration, as another factor in her decision. This fund was purportedly intended for individuals alleging government wrongdoing, but Blanche has since rescinded it.

Murkowski’s statement also included apprehensions about a nearly $2 billion fund within the Department, which might have supported January 6 protesters. She suggested that this fund is only off the table due to Blanche’s pending nomination.

The opposition to Blanche’s nomination extends beyond Murkowski. Senator Susan Collins of Maine has also voiced her disapproval. As Blanche is currently acting as Attorney General, he has been active in addressing GOP concerns, including a visit to Alaska to engage with local and tribal leaders.

Blanche’s background includes serving as President Trump’s personal attorney in 2023, defending him in matters related to hush money payments, the 2020 election results, and the handling of classified documents. His history has contributed to the skepticism among certain Senators.

With all Democrats expected to oppose his nomination, and the absence of Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, every GOP vote is crucial. The focus now shifts to Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who has been critical of the administration following his primary loss to a Trump-endorsed candidate.
