Senate Democrats Introduce Bill to Restore Access

Senate Democrats have launched a legislative effort to oppose Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s restrictions on media access at the Pentagon. The Protecting Pentagon Press Access Act seeks to reinstate previous levels of access for journalists, including the reopening of the ‘Correspondents’ Corridor,’ a key workspace for national security reporters.

Introduced by Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), the bill aims to allow unescorted access to areas previously open to reporters before the Trump administration’s restrictions in late 2025.

Challenges and Support

Gaining momentum in a GOP-controlled Senate will be difficult. However, Schatz emphasized the importance of transparency and accurate reporting during wartime, stating, “Our bill will reverse the Pentagon’s effort to shut out the free press and make sure the public gets the information it deserves.” The Pentagon has chosen not to comment on the legislation.

The bill is co-sponsored by Senators Adam Schiff, Jeanne Shaheen, Jon Ossoff, Chris Van Hollen, Tammy Duckworth, Tim Kaine, Richard Blumenthal, Elizabeth Warren, Chris Coons, Cory Booker, Ron Wyden, Jeff Merkley, and Jacky Rosen.

Current Restrictions and Legal Battles

Under Hegseth’s direction, new credentialing rules have been imposed, requiring escorts for a significant portion of reporters at the facility. These measures aim to prevent unauthorized leaks and protect national security. The New York Times has legally challenged these restrictions, citing First Amendment rights.

A recent federal appeals court ruled in favor of temporarily enforcing escort requirements, reversing an earlier decision. The legislation calls for security reviews to be handled by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency.
