Senate Minority Leader Schumer Avoids Comment on Gallego Controversy

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, chose not to address the recent scandal involving a fellow party member. Instead, he focused on criticizing President Donald Trump’s upcoming address on foreign interference in the 2020 election.

The New York Post reported that Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, engaged in sexual relationships with at least two staffers in the House, neither of whom worked for him. House rules do not bar members from relationships with staffers outside their office.

According to sources, Gallego was believed to be unmarried during these relationships. He has admitted to the relationships, which involved aides to Texas Democrats. When questioned, Gallego stated, “I’m not going to engage in gossip.”

The situation arises amidst Gallego’s consideration for a 2028 presidential run. His office did not respond to a request for comment.

This issue follows scrutiny over Gallego’s relationship with former Representative Eric Swalwell, who had stepped down after allegations of sexual misconduct. Swalwell has denied all accusations.

Gallego distanced himself from Swalwell, acknowledging that their close relationship affected his judgment. He has hired a former deputy press secretary to handle communications relating to this and a dismissed Senate Ethics investigation.

The probe dismissed by the Senate Ethics Committee last month originated from Representative Anna Paulina Luna’s allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations against Gallego. He claimed the accusations were unfounded and politically motivated.

In response to the new allegations, Luna commented, urging Gallego to resign and criticized him publicly.
