Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona is advocating for an investigation into the living conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln. This call to action comes after a sailor’s grandmother reported that her grandson has experienced significant weight loss during the ship’s prolonged deployment.
Kelly, who has a background as a Navy combat pilot and currently serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, shared his concerns during an interview with Morning Edition. The grandmother described her grandson as already slim when he enlisted and noted a further weight loss of 20 to 25 pounds. Kelly termed the situation as ‘depressing’ and ‘very difficult.’
He expressed dissatisfaction with the responses from President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, whom he believes have been dismissive of the issues on the Lincoln. In response, Kelly and fellow lawmakers are pushing for an investigation. They propose sending a bipartisan congressional delegation to the carrier to evaluate the conditions directly.
