Republican Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas has made a significant move regarding the potential trade conflict involving Canada’s Bombardier aircraft. Following President Donald Trump’s threat to ban Bombardier from selling in the United States unless production is relocated to U.S. soil, Moran reached out to the Trump administration.
Moran emphasized the contributions of Bombardier to Kansas, particularly in Wichita, where its presence is crucial for many workers linked to Bombardier’s operations and supply chain. He stated his commitment to ensuring Bombardier’s manufacturing in Kansas not only stays but expands to create more American jobs. Moran highlighted Kansas as a hub boasting a skilled workforce, and he expressed openness to hosting leaders in aircraft and defense manufacturing in the region, known as the ‘Air Capital of the World.’
Trump’s remarks coincided with the looming implementation of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. This followed Trump’s imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods after failed trade discussions in August. On Truth Social, Trump expressed his stance against Bombardier, insisting that to access the U.S. market, production must occur domestically.
Bombardier responded on their website, describing their role as a ‘strong contributor’ to the U.S. aerospace sector, responsible for creating tens of thousands of jobs across the country. Though not directly addressing Trump’s threats, they underscored the use of American-made components like engines and avionics in their aircraft.
Bombardier employs American workers nationwide, with operations in states such as Kansas, Texas, Arizona, and others, maintaining a presence in more than 20 states. Their supply chain involves approximately 2,800 American companies, spending over $2.5 billion annually with suppliers.
The company valued its partnerships with American firms and employees, stating their plans to invest in people, customers, and the U.S. communities they operate in. This situation is ongoing, with further developments expected.
