Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faces a significant hurdle as Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced her opposition to his nomination. Her decision deals another blow to Blanche’s challenging confirmation process.
Despite making efforts to gain Murkowski’s support, including a visit to Alaska, Blanche’s association with President Trump’s $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and concerns over a politicized Justice Department influenced Murkowski’s choice.
The politicization and weaponization of the Department have accelerated under this administration, Murkowski stated. She criticized the department’s handling of the Epstein files, sweeping immunity protections, and targeting of individuals.
Murkowski also expressed concern about the DOJ’s $2 billion fund, initially intended for projects Trump supported. Though there was an agreement to rescind the fund, she argued its future remains uncertain.
Several lawmakers have noted that despite Blanche’s assurance to cease the fund, Trump expressed interest in its revival. Before Murkowski’s decision, Trump criticized her stance in an interview, asserting his contributions to Alaska.
The Senate’s vote on Blanche’s nomination remains uncertain. If Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La., opposes Blanche and Mitch McConnell remains absent, a 50-50 vote could result. Vice President JD Vance might need to break the tie.
Currently, Murkowski and Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, publicly oppose Blanche’s confirmation. Murkowski emphasized the need for an Attorney General who will counteract the administration’s impulses, expressing doubts about Blanche meeting that standard.
