Senator Rand Paul Subpoenas Dr. Fauci for Hearing on COVID-19 Origins

Washington D.C. — Republican Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky has released over a thousand pages of journal entries from Dr. Anthony Fauci, ahead of an anticipated hearing regarding the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, will involve the nation’s former leading infectious disease expert.

Senator Paul, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, issued a subpoena to Dr. Fauci to appear before the committee. This is part of an ongoing investigation into how the coronavirus originated. Senator Paul has consistently advocated for the theory that the virus originated from a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, rather than through natural transmission from animals to humans.

Senator Paul asserts that Dr. Fauci, along with other government officials, has provided misleading information to the public and Congress about the pandemic’s source.

The journal entries span from December 2019, prior to the U.S. public health emergency declaration, to December 2022, when Dr. Fauci retired as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a role he held for nearly 40 years.

Many scientists hold the belief that the virus emerged naturally from bats, later spreading to humans through markets in Wuhan, where the first cases were detected. However, the FBI and CIA have raised differing assessments, both indicating a possibility of a lab origin.

Some of Dr. Fauci’s diary entries indicate uncertainty at the pandemic’s onset. In January 2020, an entry reveals Dr. Fauci’s view that the market was not the virus’s origin but rather an amplifier, though not ruling out animal-to-human transmission.

In a conference call, several experts considered the coronavirus might not have a natural origin. Dr. Fauci wrote in May 2021 about media speculation on the lab leak theory, acknowledging a need for thorough investigation.

Senator Paul has criticized Dr. Fauci for inconsistencies between journal entries and public statements, expressing discontent over what he perceives as dishonesty.

Various diary entries document Dr. Fauci’s media interactions and relationships with officials, including President Trump. He detailed early positive relations with the President and uncomfortable media portrayals of conflict between them. Some entries describe President Trump’s dissatisfaction with Dr. Fauci’s handling of the pandemic, including disputes over mask-wearing.

Interactions grew more strained over time, with Dr. Fauci noting President Trump’s adverse public comments. Entries include frustrations with the President’s erratic behavior and inaccurate portrayals of the pandemic.

CBS News reached out to Dr. Fauci and the White House for comments. Senator Paul’s office did not comment on how the journal entries were obtained.

Dr. Fauci’s private notes reveal an adversarial relationship with Senator Paul. He mentioned conspiracy claims aiming to connect him to the virus’s origin, alongside support from an advisor indicted on related charges.

Earlier diary entries discuss email releases from the pandemic’s early days, defending Dr. Fauci against accusations. He described clashes with Senator Paul over the National Institutes of Health’s involvement in gain-of-function research, refuting claims of false testimony.

Dr. Fauci concluded a Senate appearance by directly challenging Senator Paul’s accusations. Despite ongoing criticisms, he maintained professionalism in interactions regarding COVID-19.
