Shift in Democratic Party Raises Concerns for Former Sanders Supporter

A former operative for Bernie Sanders has raised concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party. Evan Barker, who previously supported Democratic candidates, now warns that the party has become heavily influenced by its far-left faction.

Party Dynamics

Barker points to efforts made by the Democratic establishment during the 2020 elections to suppress the party’s progressive wing. She believes these attempts backfired, empowering activist groups to create their own political networks. This included training and recruiting new donors, among them billionaires.

Influence of Activists and Donors

The party’s current state, according to Barker, reflects a substantial internal shift influenced by activists, donors, and staffers. She notes that many within the party’s support structure lean further left than the politicians they assist.

“They have these hyper-left-leaning donors coupled with staff that’s been radicalized and the base,” Barker said.

Barker noted this change even within the movement she once supported, citing Sanders’ evolving positions on issues such as gun control and immigration.

Recent Electoral Success

A new wave of progressive candidates have emerged ahead of the midterm elections. Abdul El-Sayed, a notable Michigan Senate candidate, secured the Democratic nomination, embodying the movement Sanders fostered.

Other figures like Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez have also achieved primary victories in New York, supported by progressive backer Zohran Mamdani.

A Personal Shift

Barker shared that the shift in the Democratic Party’s stance on issues prompted her to leave. Influenced initially by Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, she feels the party has since moved left on key issues like immigration, identity politics, and law enforcement funding.

Barker’s decision was further cemented by President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and Kamala Harris’ subsequent nomination. She viewed these events as a clear indication of the party’s new direction.
