A tragic shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday has left one person dead and multiple others injured, including two police officers. The Hennepin County Medical Center confirmed seven patients, among them one deceased individual.
The incident was reported by the city at approximately 5:10 p.m. local time via social media, with police quickly responding to the scene. The shooting occurred near 15 E Grant St., and authorities are currently investigating the situation.
As of now, the condition of the injured patients has not been disclosed by the medical center. Footage from NBC affiliate KARE showed a significant police presence, which included armored vehicles and SWAT officers. The precise number of wounded individuals and their conditions remain unclear.
A witness described hearing gunshots while descending the stairs to the lobby of a building and seeing someone on the ground. She immediately exited the building upon realizing what was happening, noting that there were about 25 to 30 shots fired, involving multiple officers entering the premises identified as an apartment building.
Video from the ground displayed active police vehicles with sirens and lights. The city has advised residents to avoid a large area around Loring Park.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz acknowledged the event and expressed gratitude towards the police for their efforts in addressing the situation. He mentioned that his public safety team was en route to the area and emphasized the state’s thoughts and prayers for first responders.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives in St. Paul confirmed its response to the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel also stated that the agency is aware of the situation and ready to offer any necessary resources to support local authorities.
