Aeromexico Flight Incident, 2018
On July 31, 2018, an Aeromexico Embraer 190 aircraft experienced a crash shortly after departing from a Durango, Mexico airport. Onboard were 97 passengers and four crew members. Among the passengers were individuals from Chicago, including Rev. Esequiel Sanchez, rector of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines. Thankfully, everyone survived the crash.

Betty Robinson’s Olympic Achievement, 1928
In 1928, during the Amsterdam Olympics, women’s track was introduced. Betty Robinson, a 16-year-old from Riverdale, Illinois, won the gold in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 12.2 seconds. This event marked the beginning of her notable athletic career despite a later plane crash injury. Robinson recovered with the help of Northwestern University’s coach Frank Hill and trainer Carl Erickson, and contributed to the U.S. relay team’s gold medal victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Arlington Park Fire, 1985
A devastating fire occurred at Arlington Park on July 31, 1985, originating in the Post and Paddock Club. The fire spread rapidly, destroying the main grandstand. Remarkably, no injuries were reported. Despite the devastation, the track hosted the “Miracle Million” event less than a month later, with over 35,000 fans attending under temporary setups. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association honored Arlington’s resilience with an Eclipse Award.
Walter Payton’s Hall of Fame Induction, 1993
On July 31, 1993, Walter Payton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. At the time of his retirement in 1987, Payton held the title of the NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards. His record stood until 2002 when Emmitt Smith surpassed it. Payton’s untimely death in 1999 was met with great mourning in Chicago, marking his impact on the city and the sport. The NFL renamed the Man of the Year Award in his honor in 2000.
