Sports Milestones in Chicago

The American League began in 1901 and the Chicago White Sox hosted their first game that year. Known at the time as the White Stockings, they won their first American League pennant. Tragic Airline Accident

On September 21, 1969, a Mexicana Airlines flight crash occurred shortly after departing from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The crash near Mexico City resulted in 27 fatalities. Ruth Shapiro, a passenger, ignored her injuries to assist others. Her friend recounted Ruth’s bravery, noting her efforts to comfort fellow survivors.

Walter Payton’s NFL Debut

Walter Payton, a first-round draft pick, made his debut for the Chicago Bears on September 21, 1975. Despite missing much of the training camp due to an elbow infection, Payton played against the Baltimore Colts. His performance was limited to eight carries with zero net yards, and the Bears lost 35-7. Nevertheless, Payton went on to have a notable career, appearing in 186 consecutive NFL games.

Cardinal Bernardin’s Initiatives

In 1992, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin took a groundbreaking step by establishing an independent panel to investigate allegations of sexual abuse by priests. He intended to appoint a victim assistance minister to manage the complaints, emphasizing accountability and support for victims.
