Slovenia’s Political Shift Under Prime Minister Janez Janša

International Relations and Immigration Stance

Janša aligns closely with previous Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He has shown support for Ukraine, participating in the Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit. His stance includes increased military aid to Ukraine and stronger sanctions on Russia. Regarding immigration, Janša shares views with Trump on limiting migration, advocating for effective policies against human smuggling, increased deportations, and improved cooperation with other countries.

Critics and Past Disputes

Despite similarities with Trump, Janša faces criticism. Some view him as a threat to Slovenia’s democracy. He actively uses social media to voice his political opinions and engage in disputes with media outlets, which accuse him of destabilizing media independence.

Political Journey and Future Endeavors

Janez Janša’s political career began before Slovenia became independent. In 1988, he was imprisoned by the Yugoslav People’s Army for allegedly leaking military documents. After release, he co-founded the Slovenian Democratic Union, playing a key role in Slovenia’s war of independence in 1991. In recent years, a corruption conviction in 2013 was later overturned by Slovenia’s Constitutional Court.
