Sophie Cunningham experienced a rough night during Saturday’s game, taking a forearm to the head. The incident involved Indiana Fever guard DiJonai Carrington, who was ejected for a Flagrant 2 foul during their match against the Chicago Sky. This decision came after officials reviewed Carrington’s action, where she caught Cunningham across the head and neck during a drive to the basket. Although Cunningham voiced her thoughts, saying the action was ‘intentional,’ Fever coach Stephanie White offered a different perspective.
Coach White raised eyebrows after the 90-86 win by denying that Carrington purposefully aimed for Cunningham’s neck. White stated, ‘It was a hard foul, but I don’t think DiJonai intentionally targeted the neck.’ She further complimented Carrington’s competitive nature while emphasizing that a hard foul was expected, yet she did not see intention behind it. White previously coached Carrington for two seasons with the Connecticut Sun;
However, Cunningham maintained her position, believing the foul was a bid for attention on a nationally televised game. ‘When people play the Fever, they’re looking for attention,’ Cunningham stated. Following her ejection, Carrington fueled the situation by posting ‘White Privilege’ on social media, subsequently creating discussion on the post’s implicatures. Cunningham dismissed any racial context to the ejection, citing past personal experiences. She commented, ‘This has nothing to do with race.’
Despite White’s familiarity with Carrington, due to coaching her previously, Cunningham desired stronger support from her current coach. Cunningham expressed, ‘I could have used more unequivocal support.’ This incident underlines complexities coaches face in providing team support while acknowledging previous affiliations.
