Sophie Cunningham’s Stance Sparks Controversy in WNBA

Sophie Cunningham, a player for the Indiana Fever, has become a polarizing figure in the world of sports. Fans either admire or criticize her. During the Fever’s game in Portland against the new WNBA team, the Portland Fire, her controversial views were evident.

Cunningham supports the idea of keeping women’s sports and spaces exclusively female. This has led to demonstrations outside her games. The initial rally took place in Seattle, sparking confrontation from trans rights supporters. At this event, Celeste Keaton, a co-owner of the Seattle Storm, faced penalties for her actions against young fans supporting Cunningham. Additionally, Marco Esquivel, a Nordstrom local store director, reportedly engaged in verbal abuse during the event. Nordstrom has not issued a response.

The ‘With Love Is Truth’ series started on July 28, 2026. This event was organized by the women’s rights group Women Are Real, along with advocate Amy E. Sousa and journalist Brandi Kruse. They led a demonstration with Washington high school athletes outside Climate Pledge Arena before a game against the Seattle Storm.

On the next Friday, Sousa and supporters, including Olympian Inga Thompson and attorney Kara Dansky, rallied outside the Moda Center in Portland. Dozens of demonstrators joined them to show their support for Cunningham and female athletes. The crowd gathered before the game, backing Cunningham’s perspective.

Sousa expressed that Cunningham provides a reasonable viewpoint in a complex issue. However, her speech was disrupted by a counterprotester wearing a ‘Protect Trans Kids’ shirt. This shirt symbolizes a mixture of support and resistance for trans rights. The protester joined others opposing Cunningham’s views.

During the event, I attempted to engage with trans supporters. Many declined to discuss their views on allowing men in women’s sports, expressing anger when questioned. A particular protester dismissed my inquiries, labeling them as irrelevant.

Further discussions with protesters yielded deflective responses. One individual claimed it was possible for a biological male to alter chromosomes to become female, showing the extent of misunderstandings surrounding the topic.

An Associated Press photographer suggested that young people with ‘Thank You Sophie’ signs were led by adults and organizers. When I asked one group including young girls for their understanding, a girl confidently stated her stance, opposing mixed-gender sports.

Before the game, Cunningham expressed her dedication to her beliefs, saying, “I’m here to play basketball, but I’m also here to be me.” Her comments emphasized her unwavering position despite others’ disagreements.

Inside the arena, Cunningham faced boos from the crowd whenever she participated in the game. Portland Fire fans prominently displayed trans and gay pride flags, implicitly opposing Cunningham’s views. The audience erupted with applause during the ‘companion cam’ segment, highlighting diverse relationships.

The game atmosphere reflected support for inclusivity and opposition to Cunningham’s stance. Apparel and flags in the arena visually expressed the fans’ sentiments. The next rally is scheduled in Minnesota as the Indiana Fever face the Minnesota Lynx.
