South Carolina Prosecutors Oppose Venue Change for Alex Murdaugh Trial

Prosecutors in South Carolina are contesting Alex Murdaugh’s request to relocate his trial to Charleston. They argue that the defense’s insistence on Charleston as the trial venue poses logistical difficulties and incurs significant expenses.

The state submitted a court response on Wednesday, urging the rejection of Murdaugh’s proposal for Charleston, often referred to as the “Holy City,” to be the trial location. State officials highlighted that while Charleston is notable for its cultural and industrial presence, it is the most challenging county in South Carolina for managing a trial of this size.

Murdaugh’s trial is tentatively scheduled to commence in April 2027.

Prosecutors listed numerous logistical challenges, emphasizing that downtown Charleston experiences traffic and parking issues even during normal business days. The influx of jurors, witnesses, media, and spectators would worsen the situation. The filing also pointed out that the spring tourist season and the Masters golf tournament would lead to significantly higher hotel costs. Furthermore, spring storms and king tides frequently cause flooding in downtown Charleston.

The defense’s initial request for a venue change was based on the extensive attention following the first trial. However, prosecutors noted that counties immediately neighboring Colleton County contradict the justification for the change.

While the state is open to considering alternatives such as Spartanburg, York, or Florence, it insisted that Murdaugh does not have the right to change the venue solely because of intense media coverage.

The state’s response followed Murdaugh’s defense team’s petition to shift the trial to Charleston County. They cited extensive local publicity, strong local family connections, and compromised courthouse integrity due to Colleton County Clerk of Court misconduct.

Murdaugh is expected to attend a pretrial hearing at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Lexington County Courthouse.
