Munetaka Murakami reached a milestone by hitting his 30th home run early in the game against the Minnesota Twins. This two-run blast temporarily tied him with Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery for the team lead. However, Montgomery soon outpaced him with his 31st home run, maintaining his position in the lead.
The Sox started strong with a 3-0 lead, thanks to Murakami and Montgomery’s efforts. Despite this promising start, the Sox couldn’t sustain their lead and ended in a 6-4 defeat at Rate Field, witnessed by 27,749 attendees.
Obviously I’m really happy about getting 30, but it’s disappointing we lost the game. We hope we can win tomorrow,Murakami expressed through an interpreter.
For the Sox, the joy of home runs didn’t translate into a win. Ryan Jeffers from the Twins turned the game with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, securing their victory.
“The team hands you a 3-0 lead in the first inning, you want to hold on to that,” said Anthony Kay, the Sox starter who struggled to maintain the lead.
Despite the loss, the Sox still lead by 2½ games over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. The Guardians suffered a loss as well, while the Twins remain six games behind.
Murakami’s achievement is notable as he, along with Vargas and Montgomery, are the first Sox trio to each hit 30 home runs in a season since 2008.
It’s really cool and special to have three guys in the lineup each with 30 homers, manager Will Venable noted. It speaks to what we do well: hitting the ball hard and over the fence.
Murakami joins an elite group of Sox rookies, including Eloy Jiménez and José Abreu, who hit 30-plus home runs in their first season.
Despite their efforts, the Twins were resilient. They narrowed the Sox’s lead in the fourth and overtook them in the fifth with Jeffers’ pivotal home run off Kay, who struggled in his 4 1/3 innings.
Vargas added another run for the Sox in the fifth, but the Twins maintained their momentum, extending the lead to 6-4.
In the crucial seventh and eighth innings, the Sox had opportunities to level the score but squandered them as key players struck out or grounded out with runners in scoring positions.
Obviously nice first inning with the homers, but just didn’t really get anything cooking after that,Venable lamented regarding the missed chances.
