Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, secured a victory in the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District early Wednesday. This race has drawn significant attention, featuring several Democratic candidates competing for the seat.
This win positions Democrats strategically as they aim to regain control of the House of Representatives. The current seat holder, Rep. Chris Pappas, is pursuing a U.S. Senate position, having represented the district since 2019. Pappas made his Senate bid public last year.
I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them; I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,
Pappas stated in a press release. Historically, incumbents boost their party’s chances in competitive districts. In his last campaign, Pappas defeated Republican Russell Prescott with a 54.0% to 45.9% victory.
A large field of Democratic contenders emerged for the vacant seat. Besides Shaheen, eight others, including Marine veteran and former Obama administration official Maura Sullivan, joined the race. Other candidates included progressive union organizer Carleigh Beriont and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer who eventually supported Shaheen.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced her retirement in March and endorsed her daughter’s candidacy. In a statement, she expressed pride in Stefany’s decision to serve her birthplace, recognizing her efforts in local governance, healthcare advocacy, and environmental conservation.
Stefany Shaheen’s campaign emphasizes healthcare reform with policies like Medicare for All, tax incentives for first-time homebuyers, and reforms in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Maura Sullivan, campaigning as a seasoned veteran, highlighted her military background and experience at the Department of Veterans Affairs during the Obama era. Her platform focuses on combating price exploitation, strengthening the VA, challenging Trump’s tariffs, and boosting federal housing investments.
Stefany Shaheen, having won the Democratic primary, is set to advance to the general election scheduled for November 3.
