Stephen A. Smith Criticizes WNBA’s Handling of Political Issues

Smith believes the WNBA has failed to establish clear guidelines, particularly regarding transgender athletes, making it vulnerable to political exploitation.

On his popular YouTube show, Smith argued that the league’s lack of regulations allowed discussions about biological males in women’s sports to dominate headlines. He stressed the importance of clear rules and order, criticizing both the league office and conservatives for politicizing the issue.

Smith pointed out that former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft to protest the league’s gender-eligibility rules. He acknowledged that conservatives were leveraging the situation but emphasized the WNBA’s role in creating the opening for such politicization.

Smith also brought up Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, known for her outspoken views on women’s sports, and mentioned her support for protecting female athletics. He questioned whether Republican officials like Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier would have shown interest if the athlete’s views had been different politically.
