Fans of Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham held a rally outside her game against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday. The gathering celebrated Cunningham’s public support for women’s sports. Many supporters displayed signs saying “Thank you Sophie,” and quotes like “I said what I said,” and “with love is truth,” referencing her stance.
“We proved to the world that women can gather publicly and support female athletes,” said activist Jean Chadbourne, speaking to Fox News Digital. Photos and footage capture fans posing with a life-size cutout of Cunningham.
The rally met opposition from counterprotesters displaying LGBTQ flags and signs. “We outnumbered the TRAs 10 to 1 and a very positive vibe,” attendee Romy Mancini reported.
Organized by podcast host Brandi Kruse, activist Amy E. Sousa, and the group Women Are Real, the rally triggered social media debates days before the event. Organizer Julie Lane disclosed to Fox News Digital the online threats faced for arranging the rally. “Despite the online threats, we showed up and had a great time,” Lane stated, praising Cunningham’s influence on the issue.
Cunningham’s remarks to ESPN sparked reactions in the ongoing debate over the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports leagues. “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,” she said, clarifying her stance as one of love and honesty. “I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” Cunningham reiterated her views before the Fever’s match against the Connecticut Sun, emphasizing the importance of protecting children without harboring dislike for anyone.
Her position gained support from activists like Riley Gaines and Jennifer Sey, several GOP lawmakers, and even the White House. Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, praised Cunningham as a female athlete speaking a truth that many consider common sense.
