A 10-hour manhunt in Georgia concluded Tuesday with the capture of a suspect accused of shooting the mother of his child and fleeing the scene. Authorities identified the suspect as Darian Berry Sr., 46, a convicted felon, as per the Butts County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began Tuesday morning in Flovilla, approximately 50 miles south of Atlanta. According to officials, Berry chose to flee, but law enforcement’s persistence, along with the tracking skills of a bloodhound, led to his capture.
“He made the choice to run, but he could not outrun the determination of law enforcement or the incredible tracking ability of the bloodhounds that ultimately helped bring him into custody,” stated the sheriff’s office.
The Butts County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended Berry following reports of a domestic incident involving him. Charges against Berry included attempting to confine or restrict his victim. He also faced accusations of arson and stalking.
Upon deputies’ arrival, Berry reportedly fled on foot while potentially armed with a handgun, prompting an extensive search. The community was alerted with a BOLO (“be on the lookout”) notification as authorities sought the suspect. The K-9 bloodhounds from the Georgia Department of Corrections, known for their strong sense of smell, significantly aided the search.
Officials confirmed the bloodhound’s role in tracking down Berry, who was apprehended by Tuesday evening. Berry faces numerous charges including aggravated assault, stalking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, obstruction, two counts of arson, battery, family violence, and false imprisonment.
