Sweden Election: A Turning Point for Political Dynamics

3 weeks ago 0

Sweden is set to conduct a significant election on Sunday. This vote holds potential to change the political landscape of the nation, which is the newest member of NATO. Across Europe, right-wing populist parties have gained strength as voters respond to immigration in various ways. Sweden is experiencing similar trends.

The Political Battleground

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson represents the center-right coalition. He faces a challenge from the center-left bloc led by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats. A major factor in this race is the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, who might enter government for the first time.

The Sweden Democrats have roots in Sweden’s extreme-right fringe. Over the past twenty years, they have gradually moved closer to the center of political authority. They first entered parliament in 2010 and by 2022, they became Sweden’s second-largest party. They agreed to support Kristersson’s minority government outside the cabinet. This setup gave them influence over policies without direct responsibility for government departments.

A Majority Government Ambition

Now, Kristersson wants to lead a majority government. He has proposed that Sweden Democrats would receive ministerial posts if his coalition wins again. This proposal changes the election into a test of the Sweden Democrats’ political normalization. It challenges Swedish voters to reconsider a party once shunned by the political establishment taking executive power.

Andreas Önnerfors, a professor at Linnaeus University, remarked on the shift of focus to who will govern rather than political issues. A poll by Indikator Opinion from Sept. 2–10 showed the center-left coalition at 50.8%, with the right coalition at 47.6%.

The Shift from Fringe to Mainstream

Sweden’s established parties maintained a political barrier around the Sweden Democrats due to their extremist origins. In 2018, Kristersson assured Holocaust survivor Hédi Fried he would not cooperate with the party. The Sweden Democrats acknowledge past figures with links to neo-Nazi movements.

Jimmie Åkesson, leading the party since 2005, worked to expel extremists and moderate the party’s image. The party now aims to deport illegal residents, tighten citizenship laws, and require strict assimilation of newcomers. They also focus on social security for citizens. Their success lies in merging right-wing positions with those appealing to working-class voters.

Key Issues: Immigration and Crime

Tougher immigration and crime policies are central to Swedish politics. This is influenced by deep changes in society and voter perceptions. Political scientist Niklas Bolin from Mid Sweden University noted a shift in Swedish politics toward restrictive immigration and crime policies. This trend applies to parties across the spectrum, including the Social Democrats.

In 2015, Sweden received 163,000 asylum applications. With a population under 11 million, it had one of the highest per-capita rates in Europe. Following issues with integration and a rise in gang-related violence, immigration policies have changed. The Swedish government reports asylum immigration at its lowest since 1985.

Crime policies have helped reduce gang violence. Police recorded shootings decline from 391 in 2022 to 158 in 2025, with continued decrease this year. Despite this, political consequences of earlier violence and debates on immigration persist.

The Sweden Democrats have built a stable base. Their support is linked to dissatisfaction with integration, crime concerns, and distrust of established parties. Their voter base is strong among men, working-class voters, and rural areas.

Sweden has cherished low crime rates, a generous welfare system, and liberal approaches to immigration, equality, and individual rights. Sunday’s election could indicate how much Sweden’s political atmosphere has changed, and whether a party previously on the sidelines will now enter the government core.
