Taylor Farms Recalls Products Over Salmonella Risk

Taylor Farms has initiated a recall of over a dozen products, including salsa and guacamole, due to a salmonella risk. These items were sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s.

The company, based in California, known for its fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, is involved in the recent cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce. They announced the voluntary recall of products containing potentially contaminated fresh jalapeños.

Health Concerns Regarding Salmonella

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella bacteria are a significant cause of foodborne illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S. The infections are primarily contracted from consuming contaminated food or water. Certain groups, like young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, are especially at risk.

Multistate Outbreak Linked to Jalapeños

This recall arises from a multistate salmonella outbreak traced back to fresh jalapeños from Coast Citrus Distributors. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, as the potential source. Since late July, 345 people have been infected across 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations reported, according to the CDC. Fortunately, no deaths have occurred.

Taylor Farms has stopped using the jalapeño supplier from Sinaloa and is now sourcing from other suppliers.

Details of the Salmonella Outbreak

The illnesses started between June 19 and July 20. The FDA reported that 93 percent of the 191 interviewed individuals had dined at Mexican-style restaurants like Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA between June 14 and July 14. Both restaurant chains ceased serving the affected jalapeños after being informed of the outbreak.

The FDA and CDC confirmed there is no ongoing salmonella risk at these establishments. Their investigation is still ongoing, and they advise businesses to check their stocks for potentially contaminated products.

Impact on Restaurants and Grocers

The jalapeño products distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors were primarily distributed to restaurants or sold wholesale. The FDA and CDC are determining if these jalapeños reached U.S. grocery stores.
