Tragic Boat Crash and Legal Consequences in New Jersey

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, a late-night boat crash in Barnegat Bay has led to serious felony charges for Kevin Wells, 40, from Warren. The incident resulted in the death of a 26-year-old passenger and critically injured two others along the Jersey Shore in late July. State police have arrested Wells on charges of vehicular homicide and assault by vessel while intoxicated.

Troopers from the New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau responded to the collision around 11 p.m. on July 25. The crash occurred on the Intracoastal Waterway in Toms River Township. Wells was reportedly piloting a 32-foot Boston Whaler when it collided with a channel marker. He managed to steer the damaged boat to a private residence where emergency services provided aid.

Michael T. Bereheiko, 26, of Green Brook, was hurried to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Two other passengers, Steven Pochick and Nicholas Cherasaro, sustained significant injuries, while Sarah Stulh suffered minor injuries.

Previous Fatal Boating Incidents

This tragic event echoes earlier incidents this summer. In one case, Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, from Barnegat, was charged following a Memorial Day crash. She allegedly operated a vessel while intoxicated, resulting in her son’s death. Multiple charges include reckless operation and lacking a safety certificate.

In another case, Stephen Schneider faced charges after a collision took the lives of his grandchildren. The investigation suggests intoxication played a role in this accident as well.
