Tensions Rise Between NYC Mayor and Jewish Community Over Israel Remarks

3 weeks ago 0

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has acknowledged he lacks the legal power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This admission has not mitigated tensions with the Jewish community. Community leaders expressed to Fox News Digital that the mayor’s statements continue to deepen divisions amid growing concerns about antisemitism.

The issue of Israel has been central to Mamdani’s disagreements with New York’s Jewish community since his mayoral campaign. During his run, he famously stated he would arrest Netanyahu, disregarding the fact that he had no authority to execute such action, which he later admitted.

Recently, Mamdani released a video explaining that New York City does not have the legal standing to arrest Netanyahu. However, he asserted that Netanyahu should be held accountable through the International Criminal Court’s warrant. The mayor addressed the community in a video but his admission did not alleviate the concerns of Jewish leaders, who believe his rhetoric aggravates divisions.

In a news conference, Mamdani was questioned about Netanyahu’s upcoming visit for the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani emphasized that protest is a hallmark of New York City, urging residents to express their views, whether in support or opposition.

Orthodox Union Executive Vice President Rabbi Dr. Josh Joseph highlighted concerns about Mamdani’s comments triggering further unrest. With past protests occasionally turning violent, Joseph criticized the mayor for potentially inciting more conflict based on misinformation.

Rabbi Mark Wildes, of the Manhattan Jewish Experience, interpreted Mamdani’s remarks as demonstrating hostility towards Israel while dismissing Netanyahu’s policies. Wildes argued that Mamdani’s comments challenge Israel’s right to defend itself, particularly in regions like Gaza and Lebanon.

Wildes warned that the mayor’s sentiment, notably the claim that Netanyahu is not welcome, exacerbates feelings of alienation among Jewish New Yorkers. He noted that such statements align with Mamdani’s campaign agenda.

Despite marginalizing and criticizing some groups, Mamdani has expressed opposition to Hamas. However, his remarks against Israel have drawn criticism for their severity. Rabbi Wildes and Rabbi Joseph both urged Mamdani to consider the impact of his words as New York City’s leader.

Notwithstanding the political climate, both Wildes and Joseph expressed confidence in New York’s Jewish community and its connection to Israel. Wildes reaffirmed the Jewish resilience with the phrase “Am Yisrael Chai,” meaning “The people of Israel live,” signifying the ongoing vitality and growth of Israel.

Mayor Mamdani’s office did not provide comments on the situation to Fox News Digital at the time of publication.
