Background of the Texas Senate Race
Representative James Talarico, a Democrat, is contesting the Texas Senate seat held by Ken Paxton, the Republican Attorney General. Meanwhile, former adversary Jasmine Crockett, whom Talarico beat in the Democratic primary, has chosen to campaign independently rather than support him publicly.
Crockett’s decision highlights lingering party tensions as Democrats attempt to loosen Republican control in Texas.
Jasmine Crockett’s Stance
After conceding in March, Crockett endorsed Talarico but focused her statements on party unity over personal enthusiasm. Reflecting on Beto O’Rourke’s failed 2018 Senate bid, Crockett emphasized the importance of downballot campaigns, arguing that widespread recruitment is vital for motivating voters beyond the focus on a single candidate.
Crockett’s aim is to energize voters for all races, drawing attention to candidates beneath the top of the ticket. She noted the lack of excitement for Talarico among Black voters but believes they will still support Democrats due to Republican policies that target them. A TSU poll supports her claim, showing 79 percent of likely Black voters intending to vote Democrat, despite limited enthusiasm for Talarico.
Talarico’s Response to Crockett
Talarico commended Crockett’s commitment to downballot efforts and underscored the importance of party cohesion in an interview with theGrio. He clarified his remarks from an earlier primary encounter, denying racial connotations and affirming Crockett’s campaign abilities. He reiterated his willingness for Crockett to join his campaign trail.
During a Houston town hall, Talarico urged his supporters to avoid disparaging Crockett. He appreciates her endorsement and acknowledges her contributions to the broader party movement.
Polling Results and Election Outlook
Texas remains a critical state for Democrats seeking control in the upcoming Senate midterms. Recent polls from Texas Public Opinion Research (TPOR) show Talarico with a slight lead over Paxton, indicating growing support as election day approaches.
The TPOR survey, conducted from August 21 to 24, sampled 1,000 likely voters and revealed Talarico leading 48 percent to 42 percent, with minor support for Libertarian candidate Ted Brown. The poll indicates increasing voter preference for Talarico, compared to earlier months where he held smaller leads.
With Texas historically favoring Republican candidates, the Cook Political Report and Fox News position the state as a ‘tossup,’ while The Sabato Crystal Ball suggests it ‘leans Republican.’ Despite the odds, Talarico’s momentum and Paxton’s contentious Republican primary victory present potential for a Democratic upset.
