The Case for Permanent Daylight Saving Time

Arguments for Permanent Daylight Saving Time

Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist, together with comedian Joe Machi, supports the idea of making daylight saving time permanent. Davis jokingly referred to ‘mornings as stupid’ while highlighting the benefit of having sunlight during the afternoons when more people are active. Machi noted the increased safety and enjoyment for children who can see better in the evenings when leaving after-school activities.

The Benefits of Daylight and Sleep

Research indicates spending more time in daylight could help individuals fall asleep earlier and enjoy deeper sleep at night. A study by the University of Manchester revealed that adults exposed to brighter and more consistent daylight tend to fall asleep and wake earlier, achieving more deep sleep early at night.

The study, published in the journal NPJ Biological Timing and Sleep, compiled data over 500 days from 89 adults using light sensors and sleep trackers.

Insights from Sleep Experts

Jennifer Martin, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at Florida International University, emphasized the role of light in regulating the body’s internal clock. She explained how light signals the brain to be awake, thereby influencing sleep. Martin advises spending time outdoors in the morning to establish a consistent sleep-wake cycle.

Practical Sleep Advice

Martin suggests avoiding bright light in the evening and maintaining a consistent wake-up time to support healthy sleep patterns. She warns against varying wake times by more than an hour to avoid ‘jet lag’ feelings, and encourages adults to aim for at least seven hours of sleep nightly.

Study Limitations

While the study links brighter daytime light with better sleep, researchers acknowledge limitations such as the use of wrist-worn devices instead of direct eye measures and not accounting for factors like physical activity or meals. These aspects could influence the findings.
