In the early phase of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Western nations focused on providing Ukraine with artillery and tanks to combat Russian forces. Now, entering the fifth year of war, a shift in strategy is evident. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky states that the conflict has transitioned into a ‘battle in the sky,’ which is crucial for Ukraine and its Western allies.
Stalemate on the Ground
The ground conflict has reached a deadlock. Russia continues its attempt to seize Ukrainian lands, yet progress is slow and costly. According to Ukraine, Russian forces suffered close to 40,000 casualties in June alone, totaling about 1,300 casualties per square kilometer taken, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War. This figure is nearly 19 times higher than a year ago. The institute observes that Ukrainian forces are effectively hindering Russian advances and causing significant losses.
The Aerial Conflict
The aerial conflict is a relentless battle aimed at weakening the enemy’s capacity and resolve. Russia bombards Ukraine with drones and various types of missiles. Meanwhile, Ukraine employs advanced, long-range drones to challenge Russian naval forces in the Black Sea, deplete resources in Crimea, and target strategic sites within Russia itself. Scenes of gas shortages in Moscow, refinery fires in Omsk, and demolished homes in Kyiv illustrate the situation’s gravity.
If you stop the enemy on the battlefield, if you stop the war on land, and if you deny him dominance at sea … then the next battlefield becomes the sky.— Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky emphasized that possessing the means to thwart Russian missile attacks is critical. Following extensive use of missiles by the U.S. against Iran, including precious Patriot interceptors, limited Patriots remain for Ukraine. During a significant Russian assault on July 6, Ukraine managed to intercept drones and cruise missiles but lacked sufficient defenses against a ballistic missile. Russia is reportedly producing around 60 Iskander missiles monthly, a type frequently used against Ukraine.
