Will Kalish, a junior receiver at Neuqua Valley, admires Mike Dudek despite never having met him or seen him play live. Kalish has watched Dudek’s YouTube highlights, who set school records in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns before playing for Illinois.
Kalish considers Dudek a key idol. ‘He actually went here, so I compare myself to him,’ said Kalish. He strives to emulate Dudek’s success as he enters his second varsity season.
Last year, Kalish had limited targets due to a senior-heavy team but still managed a notable performance against Homewood-Flossmoor, scoring two touchdowns. ‘It was still a good year, good for development,’ he reflected.
Standing 6-foot, 160 pounds, Kalish is poised for a breakout season. He started strong with seven catches, 167 yards, and three touchdowns in the season opener against Oswego. He continued with seven catches, 102 yards, and a touchdown in a victory over Minooka. ‘For sure it’s a breakout year,’ said senior quarterback Drake Mennecke. ‘His route running and ability to shake defenders make him invaluable.’
The connection between Mennecke and Kalish began in the offseason with routine practice.
Kalish’s success against Oswego wasn’t surprising. ‘I’d been preparing all summer,’ he said.
Neuqua Valley’s match against Hersey saw Kalish heavily guarded, resulting in a modest two catches for nine yards, demonstrating increased defensive attention. ‘We knew Hersey would focus on him,’ Mennecke noted.
Post-game, Kalish expressed frustration but acknowledged the strategic battles offenses face. ‘It’s a privilege but also annoying having a target,’ he explained.
Coach Bill Ellinghaus praised Kalish’s potential, highlighting his offensive threat. ‘He catches everything,’ he said.
Senior Joshua Repmann commended Kalish’s dedication and teamwork, noting his early practices and positive locker room presence. Kalish, who also participates in basketball and track, remains undeterred by challenges.
‘I want to keep going,’ Kalish stated. ‘The more people recognize me, the more my game evolves.’
