Katie Ledecky Extends Her Dominance

Katie Ledecky continued her impressive streak in the 1500m freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships. Competing in Irvine, California, she secured the title with a time of 15 minutes, 36.09 seconds. Australian competitor Lani Pallister maintained close proximity, finishing merely 2.53 seconds behind at 15:38.62. This places Pallister as the third-fastest woman ever in the event. The race marked Ledecky’s closest at a major international meet since her first title in 2013, when she bested Dane Lotte Friis by 2.35 seconds.

Ledecky’s performance was her inaugural participation in a major international event held on U.S. soil. Despite not being entirely satisfied with her swim, she expressed enjoyment in experiencing the competition environment. Ledecky holds the top 13 times in the history of the 1500m freestyle, with her world record standing at 15:20.48.

Anticipation for Upcoming Races

The close finish between Ledecky and Pallister adds excitement for the upcoming 800m freestyle event. Their rivalry intensified at the 2025 Worlds, where Pallister finished a mere 0.36 seconds behind Ledecky, nearly overtaking her on the final lap. Breaking records was a theme at the event, with the U.S. setting a new world record in the mixed-gender 4x100m medley relay. Will Modglin, Van Mathias, Gretchen Walsh, and Kate Douglass achieved a time of 3:36.70, surpassing the previous record of 3:37.43 set by the U.S. at the 2024 Olympics.

Gretchen Walsh showcased remarkable speed, winning the 50m butterfly in 24.65 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in history. She is ranked second-fastest all-time in this event and holds records in the 100m fly and 50m free.

Berkoff and Smith Shine in Backstroke

Katharine Berkoff and Regan Smith delivered strong performances for the U.S. in the women’s 100m backstroke. Berkoff achieved the fastest time, 57.93 seconds, marking the first American to surpass world record holder Regan Smith at an international meet since 2018. Smith followed closely with a time of 58.11 seconds.

Australian Victory in Men’s 800m

In the men’s 800m freestyle, Australian Sam Short triumphed over American Bobby Finke, winning by 5.5 seconds. Meanwhile, Luke Hobson and Gabriel Jett ensured a one-two finish for the U.S. in the men’s 200m free, delivering impressive performances. Hobson’s winning time of 1:43.85 marked his first individual title at a major long-course meet.

In the men’s 200m butterfly, Luca Urlando continued his success by setting a new meet record at 1:53.11, breaking the previous mark set by Michael Phelps in 2006.
