The Tennessee Titans are facing concerns as linebacker Cedric Gray enters the NFL’s concussion protocol following an unfortunate UTV accident over the weekend. The team released a statement confirming that Gray sustained a concussion and minor injuries during the incident in Tennessee. They expressed hope for his swift recovery, anticipating his return to full health soon, pending clearance from the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Gray’s situation arises merely days before the Titans kick off their season against the New York Jets, led by head coach Robert Saleh. With concussion protocol regulations requiring players to complete several phases of the NFL’s return-to-participation program, Gray’s participation in Week 1 seems unlikely.
Gray, a former fourth-round draft pick from 2024, is entering his third season with the Titans following a remarkable year. He recorded 164 total tackles, ranking fourth in the NFL, alongside seven tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and one sack over 16 games. Pro Football Focus (PFF) awarded him an overall grade of 78.9, placing him seventh among 88 qualified linebackers, and a 92.7 run defense grade, second highest in the league. Gray had been demonstrating Pro Bowl-level performance and was expected to continue excelling this season.
The Titans now face the challenge of beginning their campaign without Gray, increasing the expectations on veteran linebacker Cody Barton. Third-year player James Williams Sr. and rookie Anthony Hill Jr., drafted in the second round, will need to step up to compensate for Gray’s absence.
