Tom Cruise is set to redefine his acting career with a striking transformation in his latest role. On Monday, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Alejandro Iñárritu’s highly-awaited film, Digger. This trailer offers a first look at the 64-year-old actor in a role unlike any he has played in recent years.
Cruise takes on the character of Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil mogul whose choices imperil the world, ultimately leading him on an extraordinary journey to save humanity. The film’s official synopsis details Cruise’s character’s quest to demonstrate he is “humanity’s hero before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything.”
The trailer begins with Digger anxiously attending to his sick cat, then venting at an employee who suggests halting one of the company’s major projects. This venture threatens to unleash a staggering $18 trillion disaster, setting the scene for the film’s gripping narrative. Cruise is barely recognizable in the footage, showcasing a dramatically altered appearance as the volatile billionaire.
Fans took to social media to comment on Cruise’s stunning transformation. “Respect for the glow down king,” one user wrote. “DIGGER looks hilarious already.” Another user shared enthusiasm about Cruise’s appearance, stating, “Can’t get over the way you look. Les Grossman vibe, I bet you had a blast making this film. You are so amazing!”
Digger represents Cruise’s first major role outside his blockbuster franchises, Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, marking a new chapter in his career. Directed by Oscar-winning Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for his work on Birdman and The Revenant, the film is set for release on October 2.
Cruise showcased the trailer during a Q&A in Los Angeles, praising both the ambitious project and his collaboration with Iñárritu. “I have never experienced anything that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro,” Cruise explained, according to People. “When you see this film, it’s completely original.”
The impressive ensemble cast features Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman.
Before the trailer’s release, Cruise expanded his online presence by joining TikTok to promote the film, quickly gaining over 1.4 million followers.
