Fans are reacting after Tom Holland discussed his choice for the next Spider-Man. Holland, who is returning as Spider-Man in the upcoming film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” shared with Esquire his thoughts on who should follow in his footsteps.
Holland reflected on Robert Downey’s influence on his career, saying, “Robert was a mentor for me in my early films. I’d love to be that guide for the next actor.” Downey played Iron Man alongside Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When asked who he would like to see as his successor, the 30-year-old actor mentioned Owen Cooper, stating, “Owen Cooper would be awesome. He’s incredibly talented and everyone’s talking about him.” Cooper, 16, gained recognition for his role in Netflix’s “Adolescence.” His performance earned him Best Supporting Actor awards from Critics Choice, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the Emmys for a limited series.
Fans shared their views on social media regarding Holland’s choice. One fan remarked, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in ‘Adolescence.’ He has the skills needed for Peter Parker.”
Another commented, “If Marvel goes with this, it would be top-tier casting. Holland planning for the future—great move. His support adds credibility. It’s a graceful transition.”
Despite the support, some fans aren’t ready to see Holland leave the role he’s played since 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” One fan expressed, “Holland naming Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the logic, but I’m not ready to part with his Peter Parker.”
Holland also mentioned his aspirations for the franchise in a recent Empire interview. He said, “For whoever’s next, whether a Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman, I’d love to help shape the next phase.”
He added, “I don’t know what form it will take, but if I could offer the same guidance Downey offered me, I’d be happy to make my exit.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” debuts on July 31.
