California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer recently posted a video on social media featuring transgender athlete AB Hernandez. The video highlights Steyer’s support as Hernandez aims to win more state titles in girls’ track and field. It quickly gained traction online, sparking both praise and criticism from various political spheres.
Many liberal users, especially advocates for transgender rights, praised Steyer’s video. Transgender comedian Stacy Cay was among those expressing support. Conservative social media circles, however, were largely critical of Steyer’s position.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton condemned Steyer in an interview with Fox News Digital. Hilton criticized Steyer’s stance, calling it ‘wildly extreme’ and ‘out of touch’ with California families and youth. Hilton’s campaign shared Steyer’s post on the social platform X, mocking his views.
Tom Steyer has taken a wildly extreme position on this issue that is totally out of touch with most California families and young people,Hilton told Fox News Digital.
In the video, Hernandez described experiences of being ‘outed’ and ‘doxed.’ Hernandez mentioned concerns about safety, to which Steyer added that protection is essential. Steyer emphasized the governor’s role in safeguarding Californians from dangers and proudly praised Hernandez’s efforts.
Steyer also posed for a photo with Hernandez and the athlete’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez. AB Hernandez advanced to the final rounds of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championships in long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Hernandez secured the first place in the preliminary rounds for long jump and triple jump.
The CIF reinstated a pilot program for female athletes who finished behind Hernandez, awarding them one place higher, thus sharing podium spots in the last rounds of the state tournament. This policy will continue into the finals this weekend. Hernandez aims to reach the podium’s top spot for the final time as a high school athlete.
