Tommy Egan’s Baseball Journey

Tommy Egan, a Mount Carmel graduate, reached a significant milestone with Troy University. In his fifth year of college baseball, shifting through four schools, Egan stood as the starting pitcher for Troy’s super regional Game 2 against Little Rock. The game was crucial, offering Troy a shot at their first College World Series appearance.

Performance at Super Regional

Egan’s performance under intense pressure was outstanding. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out eight and allowing only two earned runs on five hits, contributing to a 7-2 victory. Coach Skylar Meade, known for his dedication, led Troy to the College World Series in Omaha.

“It means everything to help Troy get there,” Egan expressed. “It was more wanting to do it for Skylar. He’s such a good guy. He actually cares about the players.”

Support and Achievements

On June 6, while Egan pitched for Troy, Mount Carmel defeated Brother Rice 11-1 for the Class 4A sectional title. Egan’s father, Mark, an assistant coach at Mount Carmel, watched his son play in Troy. Coach Brian Hurry rushed to watch Egan on TV and later supported him in Omaha.

“I’ve known Tommy forever and it’s exciting to see him have this kind of success, and I’m so happy for him and Mark,” Hurry said. “I’m really proud of Tommy.”

College World Series Experience

Troy went 1-2 in Omaha, securing a win against Ole Miss but facing defeats from West Virginia. Egan pitched two innings in their victory, despite allowing four earned runs.

“It was amazing being in Omaha,” Egan said. “We’re really in Omaha right now. How did we get here?”

Season Overview and Challenges

Egan concluded the season 6-5 with a 5.46 ERA, recording 101 strikeouts over 89 innings. Battling a calf injury affected his performance, reducing his pitching velocity noticeably.

“I was throwing 84 or 86 (mph),” he stated. “For any other team, I would have shut it down, but for this team, I just had to accept that I wasn’t going to have my best stuff.”

Career Reflections

Egan’s college journey involved stints at Iowa Western, Houston, and Illinois-Chicago before arriving at Troy. He’s now uncertain about potential professional opportunities but values the unforgettable experiences.

“I had to just be content with saying, ‘I’m just going to play baseball. I don’t know if it’s going to be my last year, but I’m going to enjoy it,’” Egan reflected.
