Tragic Accident at Silver Falls State Park Claims Life of Hiker

A 20-year-old male hiker died on Monday after falling from a 177-foot waterfall at Silver Falls State Park, Oregon. Park officials described the event as a ‘horrific accident.’

The man, identified as an out-of-state visitor, was exploring Silver Falls State Park, located more than an hour south of Portland. According to Central Oregon Daily, he left the designated trail and crossed a barrier to reach a spot for a photo. This led him to a creek just above the waterfall.

The incident occurred at South Falls, the park’s tallest waterfall, known for its dramatic drop into a large pool below. Around 6:30 p.m., the hiker tragically fell into this pool. Bystanders in the park attempted CPR while emergency services were en route, but the man was declared dead at the scene, as reported by KPTV.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and details from the Marion County Medical Examiner indicate that the man’s body was handed over to Marion County Search and Rescue. Recovery operations were completed from the falls’ base, and Unger Funeral Chapel later assumed custody of the body.

Silver Falls State Park regional manager Chris Gilliand expressed the gravity of the situation, stating it was a ‘pretty horrific accident’ and a ‘very tough situation.’ Silver Falls is well-known for its Trail of Ten Falls, attracting many visitors who admire the park’s ten waterfalls. South Falls, considered the crown jewel of the park, features a trail that permits visitors to walk directly behind the cascading water.
