The Grand Rapids community is mourning after a fatal car crash on September 20, 2026. The incident involved the death of Mario David Coronado Juarez, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. ICE agents tried to stop the vehicle he was driving, leading to the tragedy, as confirmed by the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD). Juarez had resided in Grand Rapids for approximately seven years, contributing to the local economy as a construction worker.
According to a release from GRPD, ICE agents made an attempt to halt the vehicle before the crash. The collision occurred around 7 a.m. on Century Avenue SW and McKendrick Street SW, resulting in the vehicle hitting a tree and igniting. Juarez was the sole occupant of the vehicle and sadly died at the scene.
“About seven o’clock, we hear a ‘boom,’” a neighbor recounted to WOOD. The witness described the sound as akin to a sonic boom, highlighting the shock in the neighborhood. Initially perceived as an undercover police chase, the situation was revealed to be an immigration enforcement operation.
Video footage captured by a neighbor revealed several unmarked vehicles alongside individuals in what appeared to be bulletproof vests, suggesting the presence of law enforcement without clear identification. The GRPD and firefighting units arrived later, blocking the view with a fire truck.
The incident raised concerns within the community about immigration enforcement practices. Neighbors and friends of Juarez criticized the approach taken by ICE, stressing that Juarez was a law-abiding worker supporting his family in Guatemala. He was remembered as a ‘good person,’ providing for his children by sending money home.
The investigation has encountered obstacles due to federal restrictions. Officials from GRPD have thus sought assistance from the Michigan State Police to facilitate a thorough investigation. The involvement of state police aims to overcome the challenges in gathering information from federal agents and establish a clearer timeline and context for the crash.
This unfolding investigation still awaits detailed comment from the Department of Homeland Security. The community continues to emphasize the importance of humane treatment for immigrants who contribute to society while providing for their families abroad.
