Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai, winners of the season eight of “Love Island USA,” began their journey as singles and left the villa as a couple. They expressed their love for each other on national television, marking a significant milestone in their relationship. Recently, the couple appeared on “TODAY” for their first television interview since departing the luxurious Fiji villa. They were crowned winners during the Sunday finale, earning a $100,000 prize to share.
Bryce Alakai, whose real name is Bryce Dettloff, shared with “TODAY” co-host Craig Melvin the intense emotions they experienced during the show. “The reality comes with intense emotions, anxiety, and pressure,” Bryce noted. He emphasized the comfort they found in each other’s company, saying, “In those moments of challenges, I can confide in her and feel safe.”
During their six-week stay in the villa, Alakai and Tatum formed a connection from Day 1. Though they both considered exploring other relationships, Tatum stated that Alakai’s personality encouraged her to focus on building a relationship with him. An early challenge for the couple was their age gap, with Tatum being 22 and Alakai turning 30 during filming. Alakai found Tatum’s maturity reassuring, saying, “She was the most mature person on the show.”
Tatum also noted the positive aspects of their age difference, appreciating Alakai’s ability to balance humor with seriousness. She explained, “When serious conversations arise, he knows exactly what to say and gives the best advice.” The pace of their relationship, reaching the “I love you” stage after six weeks, felt natural to Tatum. She explained that being together constantly, sharing deep conversations, made falling in love inevitable.
Post-show, Tatum and Alakai are dealing with “a little separation anxiety” whenever apart. Alakai mentioned, “Our connection affects us outside as well. Every time she’s away, my heart rate goes up.” Looking ahead, the couple is adjusting to life outside the villa. Alakai expressed being overwhelmed by responses from fans, while Tatum shared plans to explore Los Angeles with Alakai, expressing a desire to be near him. “I definitely want to be wherever Bryce is. I don’t like being away from him,” she said.
