Trump Administration Allocates $2.7 Million to Fix Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

4 weeks ago 0

The Trump administration has approved a $2.7 million contract to address ongoing algae issues at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. This contract was awarded to American Ag Energy, Inc., a Massachusetts company. The problem resurfaced following a recent multi-million-dollar refurbishment for July 4 celebrations. Despite efforts, the pool was drained again, leading Trump to assure its reopening soon during a media briefing.

The contract includes maintenance, equipment repair, water purification, and sewage treatment. According to NBC 4 Washington, contractors will conduct biological and chemical tests to understand the sources of the problem. These tests aim to prevent future algae blooms or stagnant water problems.

Reflecting Pool Challenges

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has long dealt with algae issues, leaks, and water quality problems. These challenges have persisted despite extensive repairs. A significant renovation during the Obama administration in 2012 aimed to enhance circulation and filtration. However, algae reemerged after the pool’s reopening.

Experts explain that the pool’s shallow, sun-exposed nature creates ideal conditions for algae growth. Balancing the pool’s appearance with algae prevention is complex. The recent renovations for the 250th anniversary celebrations intended to improve the water’s appearance but struggled with recurring algae and coating problems.

The Trump administration cited vandalism as a reason for the pool’s condition, but the DOJ attributed it to inadequate work. Criticism persists over this attribution and the project’s escalating costs.

Financial Expenditure on Renovations

Since 2012, approximately $49.9 million has been spent on the Reflecting Pool. This includes the 2010-2012 reconstruction costing $30.7 million, additional contracts with Atlantic Industrial Coatings, and the recent American Ag Energy contract. In total, nearly $50 million has gone toward attempting to control algae and refurbish the pool.

The cost could alternatively support funding for education or other public needs. Public opinion is divided, with a 2026 poll showing 49% disapproval of Trump’s renovation efforts.

“The $50 million spent could fund hundreds of teachers or millions of school lunches,” a commentator noted.

Part of a Larger Renovation Effort

The new contract is part of a broader campaign by Trump to refresh and beautify federal landmarks in Washington, D.C., for the 250th anniversary. This effort includes work on multiple public monuments and spaces.

Initially estimated at $1.5 million, the Reflecting Pool project has surpassed $16 million. Critics question the use of no-bid contracts and further taxpayer expenses given the mixed results of previous projects.

Despite the costs, the Trump administration defends the repairs as addressing unresolved issues from past renovations. Officials have decided to proceed with the current investment, despite earlier claims that no additional contracts were necessary.

Future Outlook

The project will face scrutiny as its costs approached $20 million in 2026. If the new measures don’t resolve algae concerns, further federal spending might be needed. Lawmakers, watchdogs, and taxpayers are watching closely to see if long-term solutions are implemented successfully.
