Trump and Senate Republicans Clash Over Attorney General Nominee

President Donald Trump expressed anger towards Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, for obstructing his personal lawyer’s nomination to become the Attorney General. This conflict follows Trump’s endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who opposed Cornyn in a primary election.

Trump criticized Cornyn for his previous support of a nearly $2 billion fund aimed at anti-weaponization efforts. Trump stated that Cornyn only opposed the fund after Trump endorsed his opponent. According to Trump, the fund would help individuals affected by what he described as the wrongful actions of the Biden administration.

The office of Senator Cornyn did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Trump’s statements. Cornyn and Senator Thom Tillis are pressuring the Department of Justice to provide clear proposals for changing the anti-weaponization fund and revising Trump’s audit immunity, part of a settlement with the IRS introduced by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“I thought we were pretty close to landing the plane last night, but this morning there’s been some more complications,” said Cornyn about the stalled nomination process.

Cornyn wants specific changes to the audit immunity but faces delays, as documents continue to be exchanged between lawmakers and the administration. He noted that higher-ups in the White House seem to be hindering Blanche’s confirmation.

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley postponed Blanche’s confirmation hearing due to ongoing disagreements. In response, Trump threatened to withdraw Blanche’s nomination and wait until Cornyn and Tillis are out of office, hoping for a more favorable Senate post-midterm elections.

Senators Lisa Murkowski and John Curtis also express doubts about supporting Blanche, and with Democratic opposition, his confirmation could be challenging.
