President Donald Trump held a briefing in New York City ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This took place at the United Nations General Assembly. Trump expressed a desire for the White House ballroom to be finished before meeting China’s President Xi Jinping.
Both Trump and Zelensky expressed interest in resolving the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. They aimed to reach a resolution before winter. Trump addressed various topics, including his upcoming visit from Xi and his wish that the White House ballroom be ready for it.
“He likes China, I like the U.S., that’s the way it is, but it’s a big deal tomorrow night, everybody wants to be there,” Trump said. “I wish we had the ballroom. If we had the ballroom, we could have 2,000 people.”
Trump and Zelensky’s Relationship
Before their private meeting, Trump stated they had strong relations and aimed to solve the Russia conflict. Zelensky thanked Trump and others, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, for assistance. Trump believed Russian President Putin would also play a role.
Zelensky was mostly silent during the appearance. Trump believed more details could be discussed after their conversation. Zelensky’s previous White House visit had some tensions, including Vice President JD Vance’s comments.
European Concerns about Russia
Trump addressed European concerns, advising the U.K. to approach the situation carefully. He discussed diesel export bans amid rising Eastern Europe costs and ongoing Iran conflicts. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted this idea was under consideration.
White House Ballroom Update
The White House ballroom is under construction after overcoming legal challenges. Trump noted it was under budget and ahead of schedule. The ballroom replaces the old East Wing, demolished in 2025. Trump emphasized the ballroom’s necessity for state visits, avoiding temporary constructions on the lawn.
Critics argue the administration bypassed proper procedures and quickly demolished the East Wing.
Upcoming Visit from Xi Jinping
Trump will host Xi in Washington, D.C., to discuss U.S.-China relations amid trade tensions. Xi’s last White House visit was over a decade ago. The dinner will occur in the East Room instead of the new ballroom.
