Trump Calls for Tax Incentives to Boost U.S. Film Industry

1 month ago 0

President Donald Trump urged bipartisan support for tax incentives to bolster the domestic TV and movie industry. He noted that much of the production has shifted abroad in recent years. Trump shared on Truth Social that meetings are being arranged with leaders from both parties to pursue this initiative.

Trump emphasized the need for a bipartisan approach, highlighting the financial losses in California and other predominantly Democratic states. He encouraged Republicans and Democrats to collaborate on legislation to save American film, television, and entertainment businesses.

Actor Jon Voight, aligning with Trump as a campaign surrogate, has influenced Trump’s policies regarding the entertainment sector. Voight, called Trump’s “Hollywood ambassador,” has contributed to policies including proposed tariffs on overseas film productions. Voight did not comment immediately following Trump’s recent statements.

Trump’s message drew support from typically critical Democrats. Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., expressed strong agreement with the proposal. Schiff acknowledged the need for a federal film tax incentive to recover lost jobs from overseas competition. Schiff encouraged bipartisan cooperation for immediate action.

Rep. Laura Friedman, D-Calif., praised the idea, advocating for quick legislative action. She mentioned prior efforts with Voight, unions, and producers to establish a national film and television tax credit. Friedman argued that jobs should remain in the U.S., noting the superior talent available domestically.

Friedman previously indicated that while Trump’s proposed tariffs acknowledged the industry’s decline, a tax credit would be a more effective solution.

The industry also welcomed Trump’s announcement. Charles Rivkin, CEO of the Motion Picture Association, applauded the support for tax incentives. Rivkin highlighted the potential for a federal incentive to boost local production, strengthen the economy, and enhance American competitiveness in storytelling.

While Trump did not provide specific financial details, he projected that tax incentives would eventually yield greater fiscal returns for the Treasury.
