President Donald Trump canceled the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, demanding the SAVE America Act’s passage. Trump declared this a national emergency on Truth Social, causing the cancellation of a housing news conference.
The House approved the Housing Act with a significant 358–32 vote, showing unity over confronting housing affordability issues. This legislation aims to increase housing availability and lower costs, restricting large institutional investors from buying single-family homes.
In his statement on Wednesday morning, Trump criticized the Housing Act as being influenced by Elizabeth Warren, suggesting it holds less importance compared to lower interest rates and the SAVE America Act.
The SAVE America Act includes provisions for voter ID and citizenship verification, key issues ahead of upcoming midterm elections. Trump sees these measures as crucial for election integrity.
House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Trump’s decision and conveyed desires to push forward a similar election-integrity proposal via budget reconciliation. Johnson highlighted that Trump has prioritized the Save America Act, which has been passed multiple times in the House but faces resistance in Senate.
“We passed it three times in the House. It includes proof of citizenship to register to vote and showing a photo ID at voting sites,” Johnson stated.
Trump urged Republicans to take decisive action, suggesting the termination of the filibuster to expedite the bill’s approval.
The housing bill advances following intense negotiations between House and Senate on investor restrictions and unrelated issues such as CBDCs, championed by GOP advocates.
The Housing Act seeks to ease regulations on factory-built homes, simplify federal environment reviews, and advocate for local policy updates to spur construction and tackle housing shortages.
Median home prices have risen nationwide to over $400,000, affecting many Americans’ ability to purchase homes, as reported by Realtor.com.
