President Donald Trump redirected his support from Jackson Lahmeyer to Mark Tedford for the Oklahoma GOP congressional seat on Wednesday. This shift occurred just before Lahmeyer publicly announced suspending his campaign.
Lahmeyer informed Fox News Digital that he had resolved to withdraw from the race the previous night, discussing the decision with his wife and campaign team before Trump’s announcement. ‘I chose to prioritize my wife over political ambition,’ Lahmeyer stated. ‘I made my decision before the president’s endorsement switch.’
The Associated Press results indicated Tedford leading with 32.2% and Lahmeyer following with 25.9%, placing them both in a runoff to replace Rep. Kevin Hern, who is pursuing a Senate seat.
‘I appreciate Jackson Lahmeyer’s dedication under tough circumstances,’ Trump expressed. ‘He has consistently supported me, but in this race for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, I endorse Mark Tedford,’ he noted on Truth Social.
Trump initially praised Lahmeyer as a ‘MAGA Warrior,’ making this endorsement shift a significant event in the 2026 midterm races. During the Group of 7 summit in France, Trump described Tedford as ‘pro-Trump and MAGA all the way.’
Soon after, Lahmeyer officially paused his campaign, acknowledging discussions with his wife and team. ‘This choice allows me to prevent distractions for my family, church, and Oklahoma’s 1st District,’ he stated.
Fox News Digital reached out for comments from Lahmeyer, Tedford, and the White House. There was no further explanation for Trump’s decision beyond his Truth Social statement.
This change came after reports surfaced about Lahmeyer’s messages with Caitlin Simmons Key, Miss Oklahoma USA. Lahmeyer admitted to crossing a ‘boundary’ but challenged the portrayal of the situation.
Now, Tedford emerges as a prominent candidate for the Republican nomination in this GOP stronghold.
