President Donald Trump sharply criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the recent G7 Summit in France. He claimed Meloni repeatedly asked for a photo with him, a statement she denied to Reuters. Meloni expressed her “astonishment,” labeling Trump’s claims as fabricated. She questioned his treatment of allies.
In his Truth Social post, Trump criticized Meloni for allegedly not supporting the U.S. during the war in Iran. He accused her of not allowing U.S. forces access to Italian landing strips, highlighting a reported refusal to permit the use of an air base in Sicily. This action, Trump said, caused logistical challenges for the U.S. Trump also criticized other NATO allies for lack of military support.
Trump underlined the U.S.’s financial contributions to NATO and accused Meloni of attempting to restore relations post-conflict for political gain. Meloni responded on Instagram, condemning Trump’s attacks as “senseless” and asserting her dedication to Italy’s national interest. She emphasized Italy’s sovereignty and stated her popularity is separate from any U.S. relationship.
Despite historical ties between Trump and Meloni, tensions increased after Trump’s tariffs affected EU imports. Meloni’s public disapproval of Trump’s remarks about Pope Leo’s Iran policy also strained their relationship. While Meloni criticized Iran’s nuclear ambitions, she opposed military involvement, emphasizing diplomatic solutions.
Recently, a memorandum halted hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, preventing further military actions. Talks between the two nations briefly paused due to renewed conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah. However, negotiations resumed in Switzerland following a ceasefire.
