Trump’s Endorsement for South Carolina Senate Seat

On Monday, President Donald Trump expressed his support for Darline Graham Nordone to fill the interim U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham. Trump shared this recommendation via Truth Social, stating, “I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”

Governor Henry McMaster has the authority to appoint an interim senator before a special election takes place. While the governor has not yet publicly declared his choice, Trump’s endorsement has brought Nordone into the spotlight as a potential candidate to fill the vacancy left by her brother’s passing at age 71.

Darline Graham Nordone: Background and Relationship with Lindsey Graham

Darline Graham Nordone holds the distinction of being the closest surviving family member of Lindsey Graham. Raised in Central, South Carolina, both she and her brother grew up in a family-managed business, the Sanitary Cafe, run by their parents, Millie and F.J. Graham. The establishment was a blend of restaurant, bar, and pool hall.

Their family faced significant changes when their mother died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1976. About 15 months later, their father succumbed to a heart attack, leaving Lindsey Graham, then a college student, to take care of Darline, his teenage sister. According to reports from the Post and Courier, Lindsey Graham later adopted Nordone, facilitating her access to military benefits after he joined the Air Force.

Nordone remained an integral part of her brother’s life, evident during Graham’s 2015 presidential campaign when she appeared with him at various events. Her statement to The New York Times captured their unique familial relationship: “Lindsey was always my parent,” she said, referring to the role her brother took on after their parents’ deaths.

Nordone, a mother of two, has committed her career to assisting people with disabilities in finding employment. Throughout Lindsey Graham’s lengthy political career, she remained a steadfast presence.

Cause of Lindsey Graham’s Death

An initial examination by the Office of the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia identified aortic dissection linked to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as the possible cause of death for Senator Lindsey Graham. While these findings are preliminary, further toxicological and microscopic testing is ongoing. The senator’s office initially described his death as resulting from a “brief and sudden illness.” They have requested privacy for Graham’s family during this time.

Lindsey Graham’s Decision to Remain Unmarried

Lindsey Graham remained unmarried throughout his life, attributing this decision to timing in his 2015 memoir, “My Story.” He wrote, “I’ve never married. I guess I attribute that to timing.” Observations from Nordone during Graham’s 2015 presidential campaign suggest that Graham’s commitment to raising her after their parents’ deaths played a role in his decision to remain single. She commented to The New York Times, “He was a young man taking on a young girl and teenager to raise,” indicating how his dedication to her upbringing may have impacted his marital choices.
