Trump Links Saudi Nuclear Deal to Abraham Accords Membership

President Donald Trump announced Friday that Saudi Arabia must join the Abraham Accords before the U.S. progresses with a civilian nuclear agreement. According to Trump, this requirement was always part of the negotiations.

When questioned about adding new conditions after Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced advancement on a Saudi nuclear deal, Trump dismissed the suggestion of rushing ahead. He clarified his stance, stating, ‘In order to do it, they have to be a member of the Abraham Accords, which have been very successful. But it’s time now that they do it.’

Trump Encourages Arab Nations to Join Abraham Accords

During an Oval Office announcement, Trump emphasized the importance of the accords, viewing nuclear reactors as vital for powering data centers and fostering economic growth. The administration aims to deploy both large conventional and smaller reactors following executive orders by Trump.

When asked if Wright had authorization to sign the agreement, Trump asserted that the condition had been well-understood. ‘We didn’t talk about it, but it was always understood,’ Trump stated, adding that both Wright and Saudi Arabia knew the necessity of joining the accords for the deal to proceed.

Questioned further, Trump confirmed that any agreement would need congressional approval and hinges on Saudi Arabia’s accession to the Abraham Accords. ‘Because they understood that, subject to Congress and everything else, in order for that deal to go through, they had to sign into the Abraham Accords,’ Trump reiterated. He championed the accords’ potential to foster Middle Eastern peace.

Focus on Civilian Nuclear Energy

Trump stressed the civilian nature of any nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, clarifying, ‘They’ll join and they’ll do their civil. It’s really, it’s civil nuclear. But that’s what it is. No enrichment. It’s civil nuclear.’

These remarks coincided with an Oval Office event marking advancements in nuclear energy. After private reactor companies achieved Trump’s goal of advancing reactor designs by July 4th, Trump heralded a ‘historic milestone for civilian nuclear energy’ and a ‘renaissance of nuclear power in America.’
