In recent comments, President Donald Trump expressed support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continuing traffic stops, despite a recent policy indicating otherwise. Trump stated on social media that ICE is doing an essential job and emphasized the need to remain firm and smart in handling crime. He believes traffic stops are a critical tool for removing criminals allowed into the country under the previous Democratic administration.
The president’s remarks followed incidents involving ICE officers shooting and killing drivers in two separate occasions, raising concerns over the agency’s tactics. A Colombian driver was killed in Maine, and a week earlier, another motorist faced the same fate in Houston. These events rekindled public criticism of ICE’s methods, which faced condemnation last winter after similar cases in Minnesota that resulted in the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
A scene in Biddeford, Maine, showed a Kia sedan with bullet holes in the windshield, marking where the fatal shooting took place. Additionally, a third incident in Florida involved a 28-year-old man who died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing from immigration officers.
This pattern of events is part of a broader narrative tied to the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Federal officers often justify the use of firearms by citing immediate threats posed by moving vehicles. However, policing experts have long advised against shooting into moving cars due to the inherent dangers involved.
During the Trump presidency’s focus on mass deportation, at least 10 individuals have died in immigration operations, with four of these incidents involving vehicles. The situation prompted U.S. Senator Susan Collins to request that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin consider halting non-urgent vehicle stops given the risks. Estimates indicate approximately 18 shootings related to traffic stops have occurred under the intensified immigration measures.
