President Donald Trump recently discussed his dedication to reducing crime in Washington, D.C., emphasizing how his perfectionist mindset influences his approach. In a conversation with Trey Gowdy on ‘Sunday Night in America,’ Trump explained his strategy for lowering crime rates by focusing on the small segment of repeat offenders.
Trump highlighted the successes in cleaning up the nation’s capital and expressed his ambition to extend these efforts to other major cities. Comedian Bill Maher unexpectedly praised Trump’s handling of crime, attributing the nationwide drop in violent crime to the president’s firm stance.
“It’s not just drug crime that’s way down, it’s all crime,” Maher noted during HBO’s ‘Real Time.’ He acknowledged that part of the reason for decreased crime lies in modern surveillance, with people constantly monitored.
Maher referred to Trump as a “bad a–,” dismissing the notion that the tough-on-crime attitude lacks impact. He credited both Democratic initiatives and Trump’s policies for reducing crime rates.
Maher shared his critique of Trump’s methods but acknowledged their effectiveness, citing the success of his tough approach. Trump plans to rally with New York police to highlight the historic drop in violent crime across the country.
Data from the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer shows a 9% reduction in reported violent crime from June 2025 to May 2026. Robbery saw the most significant decrease, falling 19.4%, followed by murder at 18.7%, rape at 10%, and aggravated assault at 6.2%.
Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in combating crime. He noted that despite political differences, there is potential for agreement on the necessity of removing violent offenders from streets.
“You don’t have to wear somebody’s campaign button to admit when something appears to be working,” Pack remarked.
Pack stressed the need for collaboration among local, state, and federal law enforcement to effectively address crime nationwide. He argued that regardless of political affiliation, most people wish for safe neighborhoods.
The White House released a statement celebrating the crime reduction, attributing it to President Trump’s efforts. They contrasted his approach with those who support defunding the police, asserting Trump’s longstanding support for law enforcement.
