Trump’s Rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner Speech Focuses on Unity and Humor

President Donald Trump adopted a conciliatory tone at a rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, altering the combative speech initially prepared before an assassination attempt disrupted the April event. Emphasizing unity and gratitude, the president still couldn’t resist familiar jabs at the press, affirming, “The show must go on.”

Trump returned to the stage months after gunfire interrupted the annual banquet, where suspect Cole Allen attempted to assassinate him. “The speech I had ready was going to be a doozy. But something changed it, and really for the better,” Trump remarked to journalists and government officials. “We’ll do a little ripping, if you don’t mind. But it’s true, it’s a different kind of evening, a more beautiful one,” he added.

The president, following his typical entrance to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.,” joked about a third term and sincerely thanked the Secret Service for its daily protection and during the original event’s attack. His speech exceeded expectations, lasting over an hour.

“Just like my presidency, the second time is always better. I’m only kidding,” he said, eliciting chuckles from attendees. Despite changing his original speech, Trump insisted, “It was for the better.” A grand jury indicted Cole Allen on four charges related to the attack.

Trump lightened the mood with jokes targeting Democrats and his cabinet. “I hope everyone enjoyed the beef tenderloins. Bobby Kennedy, right here, ran over the cow in his car,” he quipped. He aimed at Democratic figures including Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris, while poking fun at J.B. Pritzker’s potential candidacy.

“You can’t have somebody like J.B. Pritzker, I know I would never call anybody fat,” Trump stated. He comically referenced Chuck Schumer’s criticism of Israel amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. “I’ll send him a Palestinian outfit for greeting Bibi Netanyahu next week,” Trump joked.

Trump called for congressional term limits, illustrating with personal anecdotes. “A senator got a text, ‘Come upstairs and make love.’ He said, ‘I can’t do both,'” Trump joked, suggesting a lack of energy.

The WHCA honored Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales for stopping Allen from entering the ballroom. Amtrak records show Allen traveled from Los Angeles before sending a manifesto to family and friends, admitting political motivations.

“The attempted mass murder at the Washington Hilton was an assault on democracy itself,” Trump declared, mixing criticism of Democrats and the press. Weijia Jiang presented Gonzales with an award, highlighting his courage and commitment.

Trump referenced criticism over his White House Ballroom project, touted as a major drone port. “It’s going to be amazing, a phenomenal one,” Trump said.

He joked about returning next year. “If you get nasty, maybe not. But we’ll be back next year,” Trump said, promising a “scoop” about a fourth-term run, donning a “TRUMP 2028” hat.
